Osmos

Liliane Bettencourt Prize pour L'intelligence de la main - 2015

The 2015 Liliane Bettencourt Prize pour L'intelligence de la main - Dialogues was awarded to Nicolas Marischael, silversmith, and Felipe Ribon, designer, for their work "Osmos."

A fragrance diffuser made of solid silver, "Osmos" contains scented molecules that are released when it is touched by passing air. Olfactory beads that can be regenerated are placed in a sachet inside the object. With its sleek, graceful lines, "Osmos" is inspired by the oloid form, discovered by Paul Schatz in 1929. When it is hanging, the mass of the object provides the inertial force to make it gyrate, allowing the air to circulate and releasing scent from the beads.

“This piece was made for the exhibition ‘Mutations,’ at the Museum of Decorative Arts, which was on show through July 5 [ 2015],” says Nicolas Marischael. “We worked with Felipe Ribon on the transformation of an object. The idea was to revisit the hanap “Les Métiers d’Art," made by Lucien Falize in 1895. With our piece, "Osmos," we have combined expertise in silversmithing, a major decorative arts practice, with the talent of an innovative, thoughtful designer, using technology that diffuses perfume a major symbol of France: perfume.

“We are now discovering that it has many applications, some of which remain to be explored, in both domestic and professional settings.”

“Anything is now possible when it comes to transforming this object,” says Felipe Ribon.

“We have defined a formal principle, but we can work with other materials and create openings. This award will give us the opportunity to take this one-of-a-kind piece out of the museum and give it wider distribution. We are already considering other collaborations”.

Just between us, this piece is the beginning of a great design story.

Felipe Ribon, designer.
