The Foundation carries out the mission it was given by its founders, André and Liliane Bettencourt and their daughter Françoise Bettencourt Meyers: "taking talent to the top" to contribute to the success and influence of France.

This objective is expressed concretely in three areas: the life sciences, the arts and solidarity.

Putting people first

The Foundation’s commitment is mainly based on trust and relationships. That is why it supports people who excel in their fields and can lead the way to the future. By taking an innovative, sensitive look at the world around them and the potential that their respective fields have to offer, these women and men are pushing the boundaries of knowledge and finding concrete solutions to some of the challenges facing our society.
The Foundation also supports organizations led by creative, exciting individuals who offer viable solutions with a strong collective impact, experiment with new methods and venture off the beaten track.

Fostering creativity

In its various areas of commitment, the Foundation values inventive people and innovative projects. It appreciates bold people and groups capable of taking initiatives and risks: researchers, education pioneers, professional craftspeople, artists, designers, social entrepreneurs and visionary associations or organizations offering new solutions.
In addition to the creative force common to project leaders, the Foundation values other qualities that inspire respect and achieve success, such as enthusiasm, endurance, sincerity, professionalism and the ability to lead.

Beyond grants

A grant is not an end in itself. It is the beginning of a story and a shared responsibility. It propels a project by providing the material conditions for creative intuition to flourish.
Just as an investment fund conducts due diligence before selecting promising projects, the Foundation takes the time to ensure that its support will help a project reach its goal or cross a threshold. Likewise, it is committed to providing lasting, tailor-made support to foster the success and self-sufficiency of projects, skills transfer and impact assessment. Aware that the creative process can be a long one, the Foundation provides long-term funding.

High standards

Choosing projects is no easy task. It requires time, hard work and discernment. To prepare its decisions, the Foundation has developed a multi-stage collective process led and informed by experts and organizations.
Several criteria are analyzed: who will lead the proposed project? Does it offer a real benefit to society? Can the benefit be measured? Is the project replicable? What would it need to be self-sufficient? Can the Foundation be of real help to it?
Giving the most gifted researchers a chance requires keeping up high standards, which the Foundation imposes on both itself and its partners.
