Given the rise in communication channels, educating young people about the media and how it is used is an educational and democratic priority. The Interclass' project provides teachers with substantial support in raising their students’ awareness of how information mechanisms work.

A teachers’ initiative against misinformation

After the January 2015 terrorist attacks, many teachers were alarmed about the fast spread of conspiracy theories. Shocked by what their students said in class, they contacted France Inter for support in developing their students’ critical thinking skills and freedom of expression. The flood of requests prompted the national radio network to think about a system that would help young people decode information better, understand its mechanisms and develop their critical thinking skills in the face of the multiplication of media outlets. The InterClass' project began at the request of Radio France director Laurence Bloch and is run by journalist Emmanuelle Daviet.

Interdisciplinary media and information literacy program in classes from elementary school to junior year in high school. It is based on UNESCO’s recommendations promoting information literacy in order to become a citizen of a digital society. Over an academic year, radio professionals teach 12 classes on media education, listening to and analyzing reports and reviewing news in schools, in the field and at Radio France. The students are asked to produce a four-minute report on a chosen theme that will be aired on the France Inter summer schedule.

Towards national development

After three years, InterClass' is clearly identified in the educational community. The results are so positive that Radio France is thinking about implementing the program nationwide. Its local roots thanks to the 44 France Bleu radio stations ensures considerable outreach. The Bettencourt Schueller Foundation supports the project’s structuring and expansion.
