Hervé Niquet has conducted the Concert Spirituel since its creation in 1987, quickly making it one of Europe’s most prestigious choirs. In addition to performing a little-known French repertoire at the world’s greatest concert halls, the ensemble intends to play a key role in the transmission of choral singing.

While the Concert Spirituel focuses on French sacred music, it has also turned towards the rediscovery of a forgotten heritage. The ensemble performs rare works such as Bouteiller's Requiem and Desmarets' Didon, which was produced at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 2020. These performances offer audiences the pleasure of an opportunity to grasp the choir’s identity. “My goal is harmony”, says Mr. Niquet. “It takes more than lovely voices or a unique model to achieve it. I bring together singers with pronounced personalities. The range of colors increases the sound’s expressiveness tenfold and makes the Concert Spirituel so recognizable.” This is also what makes the choir successful. The ensemble has won many awards for its productions and recordings.

Training young singers and raising public awareness

"Our goal is to be at the very heart of society," says Mr. Niquet. The students regularly participate in the ensemble’s concerts to gain experience that will prepare them for a professional career. They are also involved in awareness-raising activities, including immersive opera workshops for secondary school students and performances for hospitalized children thanks to a partnership between the Necker Children’s Hospital and Château de Versailles Spectacles.

“The jury rewarded the quality of what the ensemble has presented over the past 30 years, the stylistic purity of its Baroque performances, its artistic director’s commitment, the strength of its musical convictions and how it has put its skills and high standards to use in other genres of music.”

Hervé Niquet in a few words

Harpsichordist, singer, choirmaster and conductor Hervé Niquet is one of the music scene’s most inventive personalities. Postulating that French music is one unbroken continuity, Mr. Niquet explores the French repertoire from the Baroque era to Claude Debussy with major international orchestras and choirs. In 2019, he received the German Critics' Honor Prize for the quality and diversity of his recordings. He is Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite.

Liliane Bettencourt Prize for choral singing

The creation of the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for choral singing in 1989 is one of the first initiatives of the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller after its creation. It results from a shared desire of the Foundation and the Académie des beaux-arts to encourage French choirs and contribute to the development and influence of this exceptional artistic discipline.
