Opened in April 2022, this facility offers a new way to accompany people at the end of life with a space designed as a family home. It combines excellent care with tailored support for patients and their loved ones in times of distress and grief.

The year was 2014. Doctors and caregivers in Nantes were concerned about the lack of facilities for people at the end of life. A group committed to rethinking palliative care and offering a warmer, more human and open accompaniment decided to create a dedicated place. After eight years of reflection and construction, the Maison de Nicodème association opened a new kind of facility in April 2022.

On a human scale

The home hosts 18 patients in rooms designed for their comfort and well-being. Medical equipment is concealed as much as possible and space is provided for loved ones to sleep near the patient. “We designed it as a family home,” says association secretary Edith de Rotalier. There’s a shared dining room and kitchen, terraces and lounges for meeting loved ones and even games for small children. Life is everywhere here!”

Human and innovative care

The staff specializes in palliative care and pain management. They offer physical, psychological and spiritual support, says president Stéphane Gallet. Volunteers support doctors and caregivers, and grieving families can return to the home and receive support to help them through their pain.

The foundation is helping to scale up the project by funding part of the construction work to accommodate more patients.
